Satpura National Park – Where Nature Lives Untouched

The name Satpura comes from Sanskrit, where “Sapta” means seven and “Pura” means mountains—referring to the seven hill ranges in the area. This region was once fully covered in dense forests, and though some areas have been cleared over time, large patches of wild forest still survive.

Satpura National Park, established in 1981, covers 1,427 sq km and combines the areas of Satpura, Pachmarhi, and Bori sanctuaries. The landscape is beautifully rugged, with rocky hills, deep valleys, sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, streams, and waterfalls. The forest is rich with Sal trees, teak woods, and medicinal herbs.

The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife including Tigers, Indian Bison (Gaur), Leopards, Sloth Bears, Wild Dogs (Dholes), Blackbucks, and Spotted Deer. It also supports porcupines, crocodiles, Malabar squirrels, and four-horned antelopes (Chowsingha).

Satpura is ideal for jeep safaris, canoe rides, and birdwatching. Though spotting a tiger here is rare, it adds to the thrill of the wild. The park shelters 52 types of mammals, 31 reptiles, and over 300 bird species, including many endangered and arboreal animals like Flying Squirrels and Indian Giant Squirrels.

Planning a trip to Satpura National Park and wondering when to go? Choosing the right time can make a big difference in your experience, especially if you want to enjoy good weather and better chances of seeing wildlife.

The park is open to visitors from mid-October to the end of June. This period offers a pleasant climate and beautiful forest views. However, the best time to spot animals is usually during the summer months—from March to June, when many animals come out near water sources due to the heat.

To make the most of your jungle safari and avoid rain or rough weather, it’s a good idea to plan your visit during the dry months. This helps you enjoy the park’s natural beauty, thrilling safaris, and peaceful surroundings without interruptions.
